Helpful Hints for Applying

Applying for graduate and post-volunteer programs can be very laborious. Here are a few helpful hints, especially if you are applying to multiple UCCE programs. UCCE programs are located at different educational institutions with different policies and requirements for applications, which prevent us from having a common application. That said, there are many commonalities to our applications and a few ways to make multiple applications a little more efficient.

1. Read the application requirements for all the programs you intend to apply for prior to beginning the applications.

2. When you are writing your essays, be cognizant of the differences and similarities of the programs and cautious when submitting the essays (nothing like reading an essay for Magis that talks about how much you want to be a LANCE teacher).

3. Get organized before asking your recommenders for letters. Give your recommenders a packet with the necessary forms, envelopes, and printed information for them to write a good letter directed toward your goals. They may or may not be familiar with individual programs. If you are applying for multiple programs, much of the content of their actual letters can likely be the same. Being organized will save them time.

4. Make sure you have any interview dates or weekends for programs in your calendar. If these are not announced on program sites, ask the director about the interview process so you can make sure to have time in your calendar to visit and interview.

5. Start early! Tests for applications are best taken in the fall semester and some additional content courses maybe required of you. Having directors look at your transcripts early can be very helpful for all parties.

Thanks to all who particpated and a special thanks to all the UCTC and Boston College staff for organizing and hosting such a wonderful, inspiring weekend.
